I live on a small piece of land that comes out to about 4 acres. Before I stumbled on gourmet garlic as an idea, I’d been looking around trying to figure out how I could make my land start working for me. I came across several options that included raising some type of animal but these options don’t work for me because my wife is deathly afraid of anything with 2-4 legs that has feathers or fur.
It was in September 2012 when I came across a site selling gourmet garlic. After doing some research almost EVERYONE was already out of gourmet garlic. I had hit upon this idea at the right time but if I was going to be able to capitalize on it I was going to have to move fast.
So, with credit card in hand I bought garlic cloves from Grey Duck Garlic that they say will work well in my climate. Now, understand that this is an experiment and I have debt problems like most people and cash on hand is always a challenge so I spent a whopping $50 on 90 cloves of garlic for planting. I bought three different types: Siberan, Thermadrone, and Georgian Crystal.
I then proceeded to spend another $125 – $150 dollars to build some raised beds to plant this garlic in. I have soil that we call black gumbo. If it’s wet when you walk on it you will get taller and taller the further you go as it sticks to your shoes. Getting it off your shoes isn’t any fun either.
You can check out the pictures but basically I used cement blocks and shoveled organic soil into the beds. I bought the organic soil from a place locally and he gave me extra. So much so that I was able to fill a third bed but I won’t be using it for garlic this year. I’ll probably use it in the spring for vegetables though.
So that’s where we stand for now, I’m late getting this site up because I needed to wait until my vacation to work on it but I’ll be posting the updates I have fast and furious until I get caught up.
